STATEMENT OF CONCERN

by

Board of Trustees, PRRM

We, the members of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), an NGO with more than 50 years of experience in community development, national and international work and advocacy, would like to make public our deep concern about the ongoing war in Mindanao.

We believe war is not the answer to the many problems of Mindanao. The military solution to the complex Mindanao situation won’t work. Not then, not now. Not even with the U.S. soldiers engaging in combat there.

We regret that some members of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Cabinet seem to be so predisposed to a war policy.

We have seen enough– the killings of innocent civilians, of women and children, the destruction of communities and their environments, the worsening of ethnic and religious conflicts. These cannot and should never be allowed to continue much more escalate.

We, would like to see more and more of what we have been missing in Mindanao– more caring, healing and reparations, reconstruction and sustainable development, justice and peace. We therefore call on our Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), as well as the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), to stop the war not only in Mindanao but throughout the country, and to resume the peace talks until they are successfully concluded.

We also wish to express our position that any action against Iraq by the US and its allies must first be approved by the United Nations Security Council.

Through this statement we hope to add our voice to the many others who are as deeply concerned about war and its devastating consequences.
