SOLIDARITY STATEMENT of the IRAQ SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN
for the SEPTEMBER 24 INTERNATIONAL DAY of ACTION AGAINST WAR
This September 24, tens of thousands of
Americans will be marching in
Washington DC for what could be the biggest demonstration against the war in
Iraq in months. With calls for ending the occupation Iraq growing louder
than
ever inside the United States, the US anti-war movement has called for
solidarity protests across the globe to prove that the world still says, "No
to
war!"
We at the Iraq Solidarity Campaign, a broad multi-sectoral coalition of
social
movements, trade unions, women's organizations, NGOs, political parties, and
other organizations and individuals in the Philippines, will be rising to
that
call. On September 23, we will be joining thousands of people who, during
that
weekend, will be mobilizing in Japan, Korea, Turkey, Greece, the United
Kingdom, Mexico, and the United States, among others.
Focusing on our fellow Asians, we here in the Philippines will be marching
to
the Korean embassy to demand that the Korean government -- whose 2,800
troops
are the third largest contingent in Iraq after the US and the UK -- stops
occupying Iraq.
We will also continue to oppose any attempts by the Philippine government to
help the US prolong the occupation. We continue to demand accountability for
the Philippines' complicity in participating in this illegal and immoral
war.
Our actions here in the Philippines are our way of expressing our
recognition
and support for the Iraqi people's legitimate right to self-determination
and
their legitimate right to resist the occupation.
End the Occupation of Iraq! US and all coalition Troops out of Iraq!
Korean Troops Go Home! ictory for the Iraqi People!

FILIPINO ANTI-WAR GROUPS TO PICKET KOREAN EMBASSY,
DEMAND END TO OCCUPATION OF IRAQ
Members of the Iraq Solidarity Campaign (ISC) will be massing at the Korean
Embassy in Makati to demand the withdrawal of Korean troops from the US-led
coalition occupying Iraq. "US and Korean troops out of Iraq" and "No to an
illegitimate foreign policy from an illegitimate president!" will be the
group's main call.
Among the protesters will be Fr Robert Reyes, more popularly known as the
"running priest" and a long-time anti-war advocate. He will be joining
representatives from the ISC, a broad coalition of social movements,
political
parties, religious organizations, women's groups, NGOs, and other
organizations
and individuals that has been campaigning for an end to the US-led
occupation
of Iraq.
Organizers of the picket said they chose to focus on the Korean government
this
time because they have 2,800 troops in Iraq -- the third largest contingent
in
the US-led coalition after the United States and the United Kingdom. The ISC
has marched to the US embassy on several occasions in the past.
"We denounce our fellow Asians' participation in the illegal occupation of
another Asian people's land," said Cora Fabros, an ISC member. "The Korean
troops -- under the command of the US -- are depriving the Iraqis of true
sovereignty and democracy."
The protest action is part of an international day of action called for by
US
anti-war groups who are organizing what could be the biggest march against
the
war in the United States since Bush was re-elected. Anti-war coalitions in
the
UK, Japan, Korea, Greece, Turkey, and other countries are also scheduled to
hold protest actions.
The picket will be at the Korean embassy office at the Pacific Star Building
along Buendia Avenue corner Makati Avenue at 10 AM on September 23, 2005.

The Honorable Ambassador
Korean Embassy, Philippines
Your Excellency:
We are members of the Iraq Solidarity Campaign, a broad coalition of social
movements, political parties, religious organizations, women's groups, NGOs,
and other organizations and individuals that has been campaigning for an end
to
the occupation of Iraq.
We will be picketing your embassy on Friday, September 23, 9 am to demand
the
withdrawal of Korean troops from the US-led coalition occupying Iraq.
We have chosen to focus on the Korean government this time because your
government has 2,800 troops in Iraq -- the third largest contingent in the
US-led coalition after the United States and the United Kingdom. The ISC has
marched to the US embassy on several occasions in the past.
We join thousands of Koreans and millions of people from all over the world
in
saying no to war and yes to peace and justice. We call oppose our fellow
Asians' participation in the illegal occupation of another Asian people's
land.
The Korean troops -- under the command of the US -- are depriving the
Iraqis of true sovereignty and democracy.
Our protest action will be part of an international day of action called for
by
US anti-war groups who are organizing what could be the biggest march
against
the war in the United States since Bush was re-elected. Anti-war coalitions
in
the UK, Japan, Korea, Greece, Turkey, and other countries are also scheduled
to
hold protest actions.
We trust that you will convey to your home government that we Filipinos --
alongside Koreans and people from around the world -- oppose your
governments'
complicity in the illegal occupation of Iraq.
