STOP THIS UNNECESSARY WAR!
January 31, 2003

BEFORE the last ding-dong of the US-initiated war is heard all over our land, CONTEND-UP calls on our fellow academicians to join the growing worldwide voice against this unnecessary war. Let us all say, "NO TO WAR!"

PRESIDENT Bush's unnecessary war has neither the international legal nor moral ground. This coming invasion of Iraq by the Pentagon's "dogs of war" is never condoned by the community of nations and the people of the world. The so-called White House's "regime change" doctrine is never sanctioned by the UN Security Council Resolutions. And yet the shrill warmongering sounds persist.

GEOPOLITICALLY, this unnecessary war will only guarantee free flow of oil to American multinational pipelines and refineries and will suppress Arab opposition to Israeli hegemony in the Middle East. But as consequence, the lives and livelihoods of millions of Filipino overseas workers in the region will be gravely imperiled.

SINCE our previous and current administrations had entangled our fate with that of the US though the MLSA, among other agreements, our active opposition to this unnecessary war becomes more compelling. As a sovereign nation, we vehemently refuse to be a party to this unnecessary war prohibited by our Constitution. We collectively cry out now,"Stop This Unnecessary War!"

CONTEND-UP calls our fellows in the academe to manifest our opposition by joining the "Stand For Peace: National Day of Prayer Against the War on Iraq" today, January 31, 2003, Friday at Plaza Miranda, Quiapo, at 2:00 p.m. Together with other sectors of our society and peoples of the world, we show our stand against imperialist aggression at the time of both global uncertainty and daring.

STRUGGLE AGAINST US IMPERIALISM!
CONDEMN THE ARROYO REGIME'S PARTICIPATION IN THIS UNNECESSARY WAR!
UPHOLD THE FILIPINO PEOPLE'S SOVEREIGNTY!
