INTRODUCTION TO THE
ONLINE CHIT ESTELLA READER
Monuments and physical
edifices are often built for people we admire and revere. In memory of
Chit Estella-Simbulan (1957 - 2011), we have created THE ONLINE CHIT
ESTELLA READER.
This is our way of
keeping her spirit, memory and legacy alive - in her honor - a solid
edifice of courage under fire, professionalism, service to the people,
and the highest ethical standards. In the following pages, her life,
writings, and reminiscences of her colleagues and friends will tell us
how well she lived as a journalist, editor, teacher and friend. It
was a life fully lived, committed to the TRUTH and to the EMPOWERMENT OF
THE OPPRESSED. For Chit rightly believed that truth was the best weapon
of the oppressed to empower them against corruption, wars and
oppression.
Last June 1, 2011, the
House of Representatives, Congress of the
Philippines
led by House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte passed Congressional House of
Representatives Resolution No. 122 " Expressing profound condolence of
the entire members of the House of Representatives on the death of
Lourdes Estella Simbulan, Journalist, Editor, Educators and Patriot."
Then on September 26,
2011, the Quezon City Council (Sangguniang Panglunsod) led by Mayor
Herbert Bautista passed City Council Resolution No. 5311 "Recognizing
Chit Estella Simbulan's immense contribution as one of the country's
premier academicians and journalists, who was a topnotch field reporter
and editor whose honesty and integrity was highly respected by her
colleagues in the media and even by her sources."
