COTANGENT – By Daphne Cardillo
A news report reads “Senators revive call on Gloria to resign” just caught my attention. Well if our lawmakers are not that daft enough, they should stop asking Gloria to resign; for she won’t resign. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo won’t resign.
To resign is an instinctive act at the awareness of guilt and shame. It is a moral act and specifically an ethical act. It is something you feel at the first qualm of remorse. But Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo already passed that stage – and she didn’t resign.
So any additional sense of guilt and shame won’t make her resign anymore. Corruption that would bring shame and culpability won’t make her resign. Accountability for unsolved extra-judicial killings won’t make her resign.
The more illegal or immoral act ensues the more she will dig in her toes to the ground. Petty incidents or great calamities will only fortify her stand. Indeed each erratic behavior further hardens her feelings. If she is deemed numbed, well, to desensitize is a natural process of becoming inhuman.
Now the people should not be carried along in the process of her degeneration. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cannot be humanized unless uprooted from her present status and position. The office of the presidency simply overwhelms her and she wrangled and bungled her post.
Asking Gloria to resign is to make her choose when she has lost the capacity to discern what is right and wrong. She doesn’t even know what she wants except to hold on to power. So ambiguous – and she would shift from one position to another from running in the presidential election to charter change to a host of other national concerns.
When a man is desperate at least he can still decide if he will kill himself or someone else. But when a woman goes desperate she simply becomes aberrant. More of a generalist, a woman also generalizes her responses to threat of survival.
The more we corner Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the more she will mess with her powers. If she’s only running a barangay then it is only localized destruction. But she’s heading a vast number of people with state apparatus at her command, precious money at her disposal and an assortment of sycophants in her hand. It is so great a destruction and simply as a result of ambivalent acts of one person.
When Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was soaring upward with her political career, I was scared of her becoming president of the republic. My reason then was only on her thrust towards globalization. I instinctively knew that she would open up this ravaged country for further exploitation; like when her father Diosdado Macapagal who first had the “Open Door Policy” and where the peso started to depreciate its value.
But Gloria proved more disastrous than my forebodings. She has created a culture of fear, of unaccountability, of petty corruption, of disenchantment, of utter moral degeneration in governance. We have regressed to atavism. No, Gloria won’t resign, and you better stop asking her to resign.
