Annual South East Asia Socialism Conference

Global Crises, Global Uprisings – From Arab Spring Uprising to the Occupy Movements

Implications for the Socialist Movement in Asia

November 28, University of the Philippines (Diliman Campus), Quezon City

We are the world’s 99%, struggling against the elite – the greedy, profit-seeking 1%.  In the Philippines in the last decade the net worth of the five richest families has increased 72.5% to over $9 billion, while a worker on the minimum wage earned only around $2000 per year. The global upsurge of the 99%, from the Midde East, as people rise up against dictatorial regimes, to the mass movements in  Europe and the United States against capitalist greed – of  the bankers, the corporations and the capitalist states – have been described as “planting the seeds of world revolution”. Today, with the rottenness of the capitalist system exposed, more than ever, the socialist movement must find ways of grasping the opportunities to confidently put forward the socialist alternative to capitalisms crisis.  The Manila Socialism Conference – the fourth held in the Philippines – will bring together socialist activists from the Philippines and around the region to share experiences, lessons and ideas, to advance the struggle for socialism in this critical conjuncture.
