SEPTEMBER 16 BASES REJECTION
COMMEMORATION ACTIVITY
Twenty years ago -- on September 16, 1991, at 8:13 PM – 12 Filipino Senators upheld the country's sovereignty and voted against an instrument called "Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Security", a treaty that, had it been ratified, would have bartered away national dignity and allowed the United States to maintain its military bases and political control over the Philippines indefinitely. The senate vote was the culmination of a century of unrelenting struggle for national sovereignty and dignity. The anti-US bases movement brought legions of nationalist organizations and Filipino families and individuals together, filling schools, offices, hallways and streets in protest. We need to remember what we achieved when we acted together, and we need to remember it well. “September 16: A Celebration of Philippine Sovereignty” aims to once more gather nationalists, activists and anti-bases veterans in commemorating our common past, particularly the 20th anniversary of this historic day. Please join us on September 16, at Club Filipino, cor Eisenhower and Mckinley Sts, San Juan from 11:00 nn – 3:00 pm. By coming together, we hope not only to re-live the challenges we faced and renew the lessons we learned together more than two decades ago – guideposts, we believe, to understanding and acting upon new and familiar threats looming in our country's horizon. We also hope this event will serve as an opportunity for old friends and comrades to link arms in the continuing struggle for national self-determination. We look forward to your participation. Yours truly, Wigberto E. Tañada Ma. Socorro Diokno Renato Constantino, Jr. For confirmation or inquiries, please call or text Chona Ramos (0922 8762016) or Annie Santoalla (0928 2820220) or email chonaramos2010@gmail.com. |
