Alright, and Not Alright !
LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE
The P-Noy (Aquino) administration is moving towards the right direction by the leadership by example being set by the President in not using his “Wang Wang” privilege normally accorded to the head of state for security reasons, and so that the official will not be late for appointments in a usually tight schedule. This is the noisy siren usually usually installed in cars of the presidential convoy, oftentimes even going against the flow of traffic and overtaking everyone else. This is to set the example that there should be no special privilege accorded to public officials who themselves have to follow the most basic of laws, that is, traffic rules. Now, wang wangs are banned for all public officials, including the president himself who is trying to show the way by good example. Alright! I am reminded by what I saw in North Korea during a visit two decades ago: In the middle of the road right smack the main lanes dividing the road, there are two special yellow lines exclusively for use of the car of the Great Leader Kim Il Sung (and the Dear Leader Kim Jong Il (who is now the head of state) and his convoy/entourage. He does not need a wang wang for that because all vehicles are asked to leave the roads where he is passing, otherwise you will be hit by his convoy passing through the yellow lines right at the middle of the road.
Another Alright ! is P-Noy’s directive and order to all government agencies not to put his name or photograph in any government project under his administration. This should shame all those Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayors….even barangay captains who have the habit of putting their names and photos beside every government project —as if it were their money spent for that project. This example is indeed in stark contrast to the obsession of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who had her name and photo displayed in even the most remote project of the government, even those put up before her administration. Incumbent officials already have the advantage of being in the public’s and media’s attention during their administration which is an advantage for them if they run for reelection. The money spent for these billboards, paint or tarpaulines could better be spent to improve the quality of the projects, or spent on additional schools and clinics.
The best appointments so far by the new P-Noy Aquino administration are those of Atty. Leila de Lima as Secretary of the Department of Justice;former Naga City mayor Jesse Robredo as Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government; and former Akbayan Rep.Etta Rosales as Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights. Add to that , the appointment of Atty.Maria Lourdes Sereno as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Alright !
Rear Adm. Feliciano Angue who was removed as Chief of the National Capital Region Commander by the President –his Commander in Chief, and transferred to head the Naval Forces in Western Mindanao, should stop whining and complaining in public before the media. If he doesn’t like the decision, then he should just quit and resign from the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Rule one in the military organization is to obey, not question orders, especially if it comes from the commander in chief. Remember, Angue is now whining for himself and his self-interest . If he were a professional soldier, why did he not raise hell when his adopted classmate in PMA Class 1978 — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo– appointed many PMA class 1978 including himself in key positions in the military hierarchy, bypassing more senior classes and even more qualified officers? And where was he and his classmates when the Hello Garci cheating operations in the 2004 Presidential Elections were going on ? Why did he and his classmates not have the courage to expose this before the media ? This is not alright.
The Hacienda Luisita case is still pending in the Supreme Court. It was not wise to preempt the Supreme Court decision through a midnight deal of the 6,000 hectare- Hacienda Luisita management with starving farmers, many of whom have fought for decades to have the land that they till covered by the Agrarian Reform Law. The stock distribution option is a mockery of the agrarian reform law. President Aquino who is part stockholder himself and whose family own the Hacienda, SHOULD HAVE ADVISED his family members not to preempt the Supreme Court decision and resolution on this case. This is not alright. Maybe, we should mention here that the revolutionary leader Fidel Castro in 1959 when he declared Agrarian Reform in Cuba, started with the declaration that his own family’s hacienda would be the first to be included in land reform. (this led to his strained relations with his own mother and sisters who fled Cuba) .But then, Fidel Castro is a revolutionary–and even a socialist reformer, which P-Noy Aquino is not.
