A TRIBUTE TO THE TOILING MASSES

You are the toiling masses
The true foundation
Of the Filipino People:
Farmers, workers, employees.

You are the toiling masses
Toilers on steel and soil
Victims of lay-offs, redundancy
I offer this poem to you.

You are the toiling masses
Simple, gentle people,
In your number is your strength
You create social wealth.

They are the toiling masses
Do you hear the cadence
Of their factory machines?
It is the sound of the march of
history.

You are the toiling masses
The sweat of your bodies
Mingles with the earth
To create our staple food.

You are the toiling masses
Whose call for human dignity was
championed
By Anto Evangelista, Bert Olalia
And Ka Bel for our liberation.

You are the toiling masses
Attacked by contractualization,
labor flexibilization and retrenchment
By agents of neoliberalism.

You are the toiling masses
Your strength is in your unions
To strike at capitalism’s heart
To recover social wealth that you
create.

You are the toiling masses
Your unions and movements
Shall free society from its agony
and sorrow
While unshackling the chains of
your class.

We are the toiling masses
We will be with you in the struggle
to build
A just world, a socialist beginning!
