We salute the citizens Japan in your struggle against nuclear power plants.

In the Philippines, despite several government attempts since 1984 to build nuclear power plants, our grassroots anti-nuclear movement –even under the most repressive conditions of Martial Rule in the 70s and 80s, and up to the present, has made sure that not a single nuclear power plant operates to poison our beautiful country. United people power and the nuclear-free determination of the Filipino people foiled and prevented nuclear power from ever setting a foothold on my country.

Nuclear power has long been proven to be an unsustainable technology that has only been part of the cycle of producing genocidal nuclear weapons. Their consequences to health and safety have been irreversible dangers as “silent killers” to many communities in our planet. In truth the development of nuclear power plants, especially the export of this technology, is really to serve corporate greed and profits and are the foundations of nuclear weapons development.

Today, can your government and its nuclear power industry still tell the citizens of Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island and the victims of nuclear power technology that this is the “cleanest and safest energy source” ever invented on this planet as lackeys and spokespersons of the nuclear industry claim it to be?

We must harness all efforts to develop and expand the truly safe and renewable sources of energy which are inherently part of the resources provided by nature.

As a country free from both nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants, we in the Philippines are in full solidarity with the citizens of  Japan, and with our fellow Asians and pledge intensify our struggle against the secrecy, deception and intimidation which are usually the political conditions under which nuclear power thrives.

We shall support each other’s struggle against nuclear power plants, corporate greed and government deception.

Victory to your people’s grassroots struggle against nuclear power plants !
